2001 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A heavy-duty full-size with everyday comfort. introductionthough it's now the oldest design among current full-size pickups, the dodge ram may still be the best-looking truck on the market. Clearly, it's the most stylish.  it drives and rides well with quick steering and excellent brakes. Five engines are offered: 3. 9-liter v6, 5. 2-liter v8, 5. 9-liter v8, 8. 0-liter v10 and two cummins 5. 9-liter diesel inline-6 choices. Every engine comes with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Short and long beds are available.  the 5. 2-liter v8 produces 230 horsepower, while the 5. 9-liter v8 generates 245 horsepower and an impressive 335 pounds-feet of torque. The basic cummins diesel produces 235 horsepower and 460 pounds-feet of torque, while the new-for-2001 high-output version cranks out 245 horsepower and a stump-pulling 505 pounds-feet of torque.  standard, club cab and quad cab bodies are available in lt, laramie slt, and sst trim levels. The bold design with broad-shouldered front fenders is reminiscent of big freightliners steaming down the road with a full load of logs. It remains the best-looking pickup on the market. To improve structural rigidity, dodge designed a beam that runs laterally under the truck, and reinforced both the a and c pillars. Side door guard beams were also added to improve protection from side impacts.  the optional sport package comes with a body-colored grille and front and rear bumpers, decals, fog lamps, outline white letter tires, and cast aluminum wheels. The absence of a b-pillar makes it much easier to get in or out of the rear seat; it also makes it much easier to stick something behind the front seats. This includes a new steering wheel design, a big storage compartment, an extra power point, and new cupholders designed to handle any commercially available drink container. Other recent improvements include a keyless remote entry system, an upgraded base sound system, a cassette and cd sound system option and a new center console. The instrument pod features vacuum-fluorescent odometer and trip odometer that are tamperproof, and there are driver-programmable keyless entry key fobs. Other interior features include heated power mirrors, illuminated power door locks and window switches, and an optional security alarm system.  the front seat in all rams is divided 40/20/40, with a huge fold-down center section that doubles as armrest and writing table. When no one is sitting in it, the center position provides a large storage box, with divided spaces for coins, cassettes, maps or a laptop computer. The front seat belts are integrated into the seats themselves, which gets rid of messy hanging belts -- a particularly nice improvement for the wide-open quad cab doorway.  the quad cab rear seat is the same one used in other extended cab versions. It's handy for children, pets and petite adults, but it is not very comfortable for adults on long trips. The bench portion of the seat flips up out of the way effortlessly from either side for hauling tools or cargo. The power window option comes with an express-down switch on the driver's side. Steering wheel mounted radio controls are optional. There are two new overhead console designs; one with and one without trip computer. This engine has a ton of torque and a broad power band, which makes it a great deal of fun to drive. Passing is effortless. The manual transmission can add flexibility in off-road situations, but we recommend the automatic for street use. Rear suspension is a conventional live axle with leaf springs designed to carry heavy loads. The dodge v8 pickup truck has for years had a special kind of presence on the street, and the ram backs up that presence with excellent street manners and ride.  steering revisions that were new last year make steering much more precise than earlier models. Steering in the earlier rams was light and quick, but had a lot of dead space on-center and seemed to require constant left-right adjustments.  braking, with discs in front, drums in rear, is exemplary. The ram stops quickly with superb straight-line stability. Recent improvements to the instrumentation, powertrain and body combinations have made it an all-around better truck.

1999 lincoln navigator review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The out-of-town car. introductionluxurious lincolns are nothing new, but a leather-lined machine that brings together the ambience of a continental with cavernous load-carrying space and go-anywhere ability was sure to cause a splash. And that's what the lincoln navigator has done. Sales are increasing at a pace that has seen the big lincoln sport-utility surpass the continental in popularity and edge steadily closer to the nameplate's leading model, the town car.  the navigator's success has three primary elements. To these it adds a host of features that coddle its occupants in a quiet, soft environment. Last, it is built on the rugged structure of the ford f-150, the best-selling truck in the u. S.  good as it was right from the start, the navigator has received substantial improvements for 1999, although the most noticeable of these, a new standard powerplant, won't appear until midway through the model year. Even in early-'99 form, however, lincoln's off-road limousine makes a big impression in every respect. walkaroundthough based on the popular ford expedition, the navigator has its own distinct identity. Few exterior panels are shared between the two, with the lincoln version carrying a unique hood, fenders, bumpers, doors and rear liftgates. Roof panels and window glass are interchangeable.  navigator's front end incorporates a version of the traditional lincoln grille into a rounded treatment that emphasizes mass and a kind of beefy elegance. Driving lights are set into the bumper, flanking a smaller undecorated air inlet. From the side, the hefty running boards -- lighted at night -- and large rub strips provide the emphasis. Apart from the grille, plated trim is confined to strips below the side windows, door handles and the rear license plate surround.  a rigid steel frame, suspension pieces and the majority of the mechanical hardware come from the ford f-150 pickup. Except for a short list of extra-cost options and color choices, all navigators are essentially alike in terms of trim and equipment. interiorbig on the outside means big on the inside. Even tall drivers can wear a hat while driving the navigator. Those seated in the front and center seats have ample stretch-out room in all directions. The third-row bench seat, which comes standard, is adequate for three small children or two adults during short runs. It comes with rollers that make it easy to remove it to allow room for cargo. The center seats may be replaced with a three-across folding bench seat.  a curved dashboard houses instruments and controls where they can easily be seen and reached. The window switches are lighted internally at night, a nice touch that not all vehicles carry.  one new optional feature, shared with the expedition, is an industry first: at the touch of a dashboard-mounted switch, the pedal cluster can be electrically adjusted fore-and-aft. Though the range of adjustment is small -- only three inches -- this new feature allows shorter drivers to find their most comfortable seat/steering wheel/pedal position with increased ease. The pedal adjustment settings can be captured in the standard memory-seat feature, thus allowing two drivers to change places and get comfortable at the touch of a button. driving impressionthe navigator is, despite its size, easier to handle than many first-time drivers will expect. It is, in fact, slightly shorter than the town car, has superb outward visibility, and its speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering works in the driver's favor by keeping steering effort down to a reasonable level. Brake pedal feel is light, yet precise. Extra care and attention is required when maneuvering in close-quarters, however.  the ride quality is good, though it is not as soft as that of a traditional family sedan or wagon. An advantage of the navigator's long wheelbase is a resistance to pitching over freeway expansion joints and other irregularities. When driven on twisty roads, the navigator does not lean unduly in corners, nor does the front end dive excessively under hard braking. The ford expedition seems to handle a bit better, however; it feels better connected to the road, with more feedback through the steering and the suspension.  though reasonably quiet, the navigator is not silent on the road. We didn't mind the sounds coming from under the hood, but wind and tire-tread noise were evident. Fortunately, the navigator was equipped with a new alpine audio system that automatically adjusts the volume as speed increases.  performance is a navigator strength. Acceleration is good, even with a full load of passengers on board. Equipped as a two-wheel-drive with 16-inch wheels, the navigator can pull a trailer weighing up to 8100 pounds. The big lincoln does have a substantial thirst for fuel. Built into the system is a one-inch increase in ride height. When parked, the system can make the navigator kneel down to lower the step-in height, thus making getting in and out of the vehicle easier. A simpler rear-only system is standard on two-wheel drive models.  off-road driving is not a problem in a navigator. Length and width do keep it from being quite as handy in the woods than, for example, a ford explorer, but if narrow trails and serious rock-climbing are avoided, occasional forays off the beaten path can be undertaken without fear of being left stranded. The driver can switch between the first two modes at will, but must bring the navigator to a halt before engaging low range. summaryfor little more than the price of a fully loaded ford expedition, the lincoln navigator carries more dramatic styling and a longer-running warranty. Navigator has a slightly softer ride as well, without sacrificing decent handling or much in the way of off-road capability. Fuel economy isn't a strong point, however.  a new 300-horsepower engine is expected later in the model year that will give the navigator a performance edge as well. assembled inwayne, michigan. options as testedheated front seats, all-terrain tires, skid plate package, power glass moonroof, power-adjustable pedals, 6-disc cd changer. model tested4x4. 1997 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The chevrolet/gmc suburban, augmented in 1994 by the slightly smaller chevy tahoe and gmc yukon, were really the only choices for those who wanted a lots of interior space, heavy-duty towing capacity and, properly equipped, the capability of taking to the backwoods. The only other entry with similar size and capabilities was the warlike am general hummer.  the picture has changed now. And with the suburban, at least, garageability can be an issue. But with the world's lowest fuel prices, the mpg issue is offset for u. From the front, it is a near-twin to the ford f-150 pickup truck. The reason for the resemblance is simple: the expedition is based on ford's immensely popular truck--the best-selling vehicle in the country 15 years running--sharing its chassis, drivetrains, suspensions, major interior components and front end body panels. We consider that a benefit, as the f-truck is a handsome, modern design with plenty of rugged hardware underneath.  from the side and rear, the expedition bears a strong resemblance to the smaller explorer. No surprise there, since ford stylists found that the explorer's looks scored well with both current and potential owners. No panels interchange between, however; the expedition is larger in every dimension.  it is handsome, with a sloping hoodline and rounded front end that reflect an interest in aerodynamic design--with reductions in wind noise that result--and a move away from the monster truck image presented by previous bluff-fronted designs. The sides and back are shaped more for utility than style, though what are essentially flat panels are given some visual definition by clever use of trim and rounded corners.  the overwhelming impression is one of size, even though the design disguises the expedition's bulk to some extent. At just over 17 feet in length, this is no wraith. The suburban is even longer, adding a foot-and-a-half to the total. Ford touts the shorter length as making its entry compatible with a standard garage, which the suburban, they say, is not. Differences are confined to paint and trim, and even these distinctions can be blurred further by checking off items from a long list of optional equipment. Depending on seating configuration, the expedition can carry five (front bucket seats, center bench), or six (front full-width seat, center bench) passengers, plus two more if the optional third seat is installed. First- and second-row occupants get separate heat/vent/air conditioning controls, with a set for the third seat optional.  visually, the expedition interior is most appealing. The eddie bauer roof console adds a digital display of the driver's choice of date/time, average fuel economy or compass, plus a switch for the power swing-out rear quarter windows.  materials and finish quality are all first rate. Particularly noteworthy are the soft-touch coverings applied to switches (which are also internally lit at night, a nice touch) and door panels. driving impressiona first-time expedition driver's initial impression is, inevitably, one of being surrounded by a lot of sheet metal. This is a big machine, requiring extra care in close-quarter maneuvering. But bulk doesn't make the expedition difficult to drive. On the contrary; the speed-sensitive variable-assist steering keeps effort down to a reasonable level, and driver sightlines, augmented by big side mirrors, are excellent.  it is also a comfortable machine. The ride, while not as soft as that of a traditional family sedan or wagon, is good, and cornering roll and brake dive are effectively controlled. The 2wd version is slightly smoother on the highway thanks to its independent front suspension, but both 2wd and 4wd models are very good considering their size and weight. Also part of the system is a one-inch increase in ride height, and a 'kneel-down' facility that makes ingress and egress easier.  two v8 engine choices, 4. 6 liters (standard) and 5. 4 liters are available in the expedition. They share basic architecture--a cast-iron cylinder block with aluminum single overhead cam cylinder heads--and differ only in capacity and power output. We prefer the optional engine, because it produces more torque at lower engine speed. Both versions are relatively quiet, and provide respectable acceleration. Both can tow good-sized loads--6100 pounds for the 4. 6, up to 8000 with the 5. 4-liter. Those capabilities are better than the tahoe/yukon, though certain suburban powertrain combinations can raise the towing ante to 10,000 pounds, if that's a priority.  like all of the brute utes, the expedition's fuel consumption is on the high side. summaryon or off the highway, the ford expedition raises the stakes in its two-player segment. It is subjectively more comfortable and refined than its gm rivals, easier to maneuver, and has up-to-date styling inside and out. Power Windows✔ Bucket Seats✔ CD Changer✔ Air Conditioning
